Understanding Page Rank – Illustrated

Check out this cool illustration of what Page Rank is and how to get good Page Rank by Zippy Cart. Kudos to them :) The only thing they did wrong here is what? They placed .edu sites on their second place, which is a common SEO myth that was left behind by the SEO generation from 90′s. Getting a PR6 backlink from an .edu site is the same as getting a PR6 backlink from a .com site, the only thing that matters is that the content on the website is related to yours. they state that .edu and .gov sites have more authority, that is not true, there are plenty of these sites that actually have no authority. Authority of a website doesn’t rely on the domain extension, it relies on the content, age and trust. In the end, always go for the relative content first, put Page Rank of a site on your second place. This illustration is cool and makes some good point but it is hollow and over simplifies the entire process. Page Rank is not all that matters, remember that!

Nice post, Zarko. Good explanation and great graphic. Personally, I do not focus on PR. I link to whomever and whatever site I feel will add value to my visitors. Does this hurt my PR. Possibly. But to be totally honest, I am more interested in relevancy than PR. Additionally, you are correct about the domain extension of the site. I have seen PR0 .info domains outrank fortune 500 .com PR7′s. Again relevancy is key.

Just like I said in the post, “This illustration is cool and makes some good point but it is hollow and over simplifies the entire process. Page Rank is not all that matters, remember that!”

relevancy is the number one thing we should focus on, you are 100% right on that one. I for one also link to sites I find useful and relevant, it doesn’t matter if it’s PR0 or PR7!

In the past, I used to pay a lot of attention to the PR as well but now as I have learned a bit more about SEO, I have also come to know that PR is not always important, there are other important factors too which matter a lot in your rankings. Link building strategy should not look suspicious instead it should look natural to the search engines.
