Monetize Your Website, Making Money from Your Blog

Everyone wants to make money, and the best opportunity to make money is online. So how do you turn your blog into a money making machine, well, to be honest, it is really hard. Making money from your blog will take time and effort, and it will take a long time before you start making some decent amounts. I know you heard all those self proclaimed super affiliates telling you they have tons of great products that you just install on your blog and watch the money pour in, well, that is not true, you have to work and you have to work hard if you want your blog to make money.

In this post we will go over the basics of website monetization, what are your options and how to make sure you get the most of your blog. There are several ways to monetize your blog; I will go just over the basic ones. You all heard about Adsense, and you probably think this is an easy way to make money fast. Throw up a few blogs put some content and you have money rolling in every month. No, it doesn’t work like that; it doesn’t work like that at all.

The next option is to promote affiliate products on your blog. You can sign up for a major affiliate website like Click Bank or Commission Junction and sign up for companies whose products you are interested to promote. Once approved you get the link for a text ad or a banner that you put on your website. The difference can be great because some of the companies will pay you for leads while other will pay you a percentage of the sales with recurring commission.

Commission Junction
The third and my favorite way to monetize a blog is by selling direct advertising space on your blog. This way you will know that you are getting paid. You provide space for companies to place their ads or banners on your website, the better the position of the banner and depending on the length of your agreement you can charge the company anywhere from $200 to $20,000 a month to place their ad on your websites.

Of course you can always try to sell your own product, but we will talk about that some other time. All of the above mentioned methods can make you money and make the idea of making money from your blog a reality. Make money blogging has been done for over a decade now and some people live off of it really nice, but we are talking about a handful of people. So what should you do to make money from your blog? I’ll go over the basic points of making money from your blog here, if you want detailed instructions you can get them in the following posts, each post will be dedicated to one of the methods mentioned here:

–    Make Money with Adsense Monetization

–    Make Money with Affiliate Products

–    Make Money with Selling Ad Space

–    Make Money from Your Own Product

Back to the basic idea so you would know what to expect if you plan to venture into one of the above mentioned ways to make money with your blog. A blog set up with some content is as good as invisible, which means low traffic and low income from adsense. Also affiliates will not approve your website as they will feel that they have nothing to gain from your blog. And selling ad space, you can forget it. Advertisers want to place their ads on high traffic websites and blogs; they will only lose money if they pay you to put their banner on a blog that gets only 1,000 visitors a month.

So, in order to earn money blogging you need to have traffic and to get traffic you need good content and SEO, which brings us to practical SEO once again. Whatever you plan to use your site for, whether that is to promote a brick and mortar business or earn money from affiliate products you need traffic, and the only way to get traffic is by providing a useful website or blog that can help people understand a few things, and after that you can make them an offer they can’t refuse. If you are interested in one of the above mentioned ways to make money from your blog be sure to check the updates in the next few days and learn all about making money from your blog.

I’m a big fan of Adsense becasue it does most of the work for you. Just make sure you don’t unknowingly break any of their rules about content quality, duplication, ect…

  2. Zarko on September 5, 2010

You are right, there are a few rules bloggers need to follow or their adsense accounts will be terminated. We will cover that in a day or two.

But adsense doesn’t do most of the work for you, you are the one that has to do all the work. If you don’t target your keyword precisely you can end up with who knows what kinds of ads, and they probably won’t convert as much. So nope, Google Adsense doesn’t do much work for you at all!

Thats really true, loads of blog owners are making money online through proper work on there blogs. But, excessive work or dependence on some tools that claim faster money online is the biggest mistake a blogger will commit. Slow and Steady wins the Race is what I believe. Thanks for this informative post. Will constntly follow you for such information. Cheers!!

You are right on the money, no one should try to rely too much on any tool, manual work and slow progress win in this race whatever the so called top marketers tell you. The guys that are really making money from ads and affiliate products are not advertising themselves as top marketers, the ones that do are just trying to sell themselves, they are not selling their websites like they say they do!

Thanks Zarko. I hope you liked my comment. I agree with you on this “The guys that are really making money from ads and affiliate products are not advertising themselves as top marketers, the ones that do are just trying to sell themselves, they are not selling their websites like they say they do!”

I did, like you said, “slow and steady wins the race”

People who are in a hurry to make money will never make money!

its true that there are more options to make money online, everyone may not actually succeed in actually do so. as for the affiliate sales, a newbie may find problems selling out a product unless it is a hot product.

Learning any and all ways to make money online is great.I can always drop something that doesn’t work as well but if I didn’t know all the ways I would surely be missing out on multiple streams of income.

And making money is a difficult thing. Finding ways of making money is more a difficult one. I really appreciate for the pain you took for finding the ways. It was a like a 12 bunch of books for reading. All the books will take some time for me to read.

    Thank you!

    Hi Zarko,

Great post and you, as well as “Web Development”, make one very important point that I think many people really need to hear.

Building a blog and then making money from that blog is a slow process! With the recent Google slap some people were reminded, rather harshly, that trying to cheat and find fast ways does not pay out in the end.

Blogs do work well, provided you get some training on SEO and traffic generation. But you have to enter into it knowing that it is a long term goal. That means working for nothing for a long period of time.

The pay off in the end, however, is the ability to make a passive income from posts you wrote years ago.

Thanks for keeping it real for everyone. I do get tired of hearing people say it’s easy or fast or just buy this and you can sit back and watch the money roll in! If that were the case, everyone would be doing and be successful at it.

    Thanks again!

Monetizing the blog can make working on the blog even more interesting. Affiliate Marketing has worked wonderfully for bloggers but newbies should do proper research to avoid scams and also try to find the right products which can stream in sales. I think trying to sell products through articles is a brilliant idea because in addition to getting information about the product the reader gets the chance to read quality content as well.

Monetizing the Blog will only help if your Blog is very popular or has interesting, marketing-oriented content. Otherwise, direct affiliate marketing networks are better money-spinners.
