How to Promote Your Website – Everything You Need for Success

We already talked about promoting your blog and your website in general, we covered a few things you can do to increase the incoming traffic to your website. SEO is the best way to go in the long run, but there are dozens of different things you can do to get immediate traffic to your website and to also increase your traffic in the long run, as well as your rankings in the SERP.

In this post we will go over a large number of ways in which you can promote your blog or website, so make sure you bookmark this page as you will want to get back to it later on.

promoting your website

Start with Freebies

Whether you have a new website or a seasoned one it is always a good strategy to give out something for free, that always attracts a great number of visitors and returning users to your website. So here are a few ideas to help you promote your website with free stuff:

-      Free report on your niche or a certain topic

-      Free Ebook

-      Free plugin or app

-      Free sample product if you have one

-      Make sure your free products, ebooks and reports are featured in your emails and on giveaway events and promote them through other blogs as well

Social Connections and Brand Marking

Free stuff always attracts people, but in order to keep your visitors and to get known throughout the internet and your niche in particular you need to utilize the power of social media. The first step is to create accounts and promote your brand with the same images and same approach so that people will remember you or your brand, here is what you shouldn’t miss:

-      Build a fan page for your website or brand on Facebook

-      Create a Twitter account and engage with your niche and niche leaders

-      Do the same with LinkedIn

-      You can also start a group on Facebook

-      Create social profiles on sites like Ning, About and even Soup

Be Creative and Use Everything You Can

Yeah, free stuff helps, having a known brand is the key, but these are just two examples out of many, so here is a large list of things you can do to promote your website and increase your brand awareness and most of all, your incoming traffic and profits.

-      Create a banner for your website that people can easily copy, supply a copy and paste HTML code on your website. This is a great way to promote your website and to build links at the same time.

-      If you business deals with clients, whether that is a product or you provide services make sure to include testimonials on your website. Also try to get links from the people that gave you testimonials and to have your banner featured on their website. Giving testimonials is also a way to go about it.

-      Of course if you have some money to invest advertising is always a good idea. You can use Adwords or other advertisers like Bing and Facebook. Advertising on blogs and websites in your niche is the best way to go about it, so always think about direct advertising.

-      Make sure that everything new you do or publish like a new product or a new service or even a new event that is about to happen is featured in a press release. There is nothing good for traffic like creating a good newsworthy buzz.

-      One of my favorite methods is guest blogging. This is a great way to get some in-content links and get some immediate attention to your website as well.

-      One of the basic ways of promoting is to organize an online event or a giveaway. A contest is also a great way to get great amounts of traffic and also create a buzz around your brand name.

-      You can also use the easiest tactics of them all, simply ask your visitors what they want to see on your website in the future and then act on the feedback received. On that note, if you have any suggestions or questions, requests, feel free to leave a comment and I will make sure to either answer directly in the comment or write a post about it.

-      Create a useful video. Videos are the easiest way to attract new visitors, people like media, they don’t like to read much, so videos are a great way to offer them something and get them to visit your website.

-      Always add clearly visible bookmarking applications to your website. You don’t have to overdo it. Facebook, Twitter, Digg, LinkedIn and StumbleUpon will suffice, maybe a few more related to your niche. Make it easy for your users to spread your content.

-      We mentioned testimonials, but make sure if you have a product or a service to ask other bloggers in your niche to review your product or services. You may have to offer them for free, but hey, it is a form of advertising that brings great traffic, so don’t be shy about it.

-      Write useful guides for your specific topic, that always attracts visitors and people that want to learn more about your market.

-      I forgot to mention, if you have a product or a service you probably offer some discounts, if not make sure you have a few. Once you have them make sure to include those discounts and coupons on various websites like RetailMeNot.

I won’t mention the obvious SEO methods as they are already listed on this blog, link building and onpage SEO are a must, but these are some of the best ways to directly promote your website and get immediate results.

Hi Zarko. Thanks for this share. I really need this. I know some tips to promote a website but your article has given me something extra that I did not know. Thanks for writing on this topic. Great and informative post.

  2. Mark @ TheBitBot SEM Blog on March 22, 2011

    Nice comprehensive list, Zarko.

Some of the points listed here I really need to try.

I noticed you mentioned press releases. Is there a particular service in particular that you prefer?

Also, have you found an effective way to get testimonials for your products or services?

  3. Zarko on March 22, 2011

Hi Mark, there isn’t a PR service that I prefer, after all, the effect of the press releases doesn’t rely on the service as much as the press release it self. There are too many non-newsworthy releases on the net, so if you have something valuable you can use any solid service and get excellent results.

testimonials…well the best way is to ask for them. If the client is satisfied he will be glad to give you a testimonial, that is an easy part, the hard part is providing a service that your customers will love…

  4. Jason @ Online Business SEO on March 23, 2011

    Solid list Zarko!

Promoting your works (extreme blog posts, infographs, how to videos, etc.) on related threads on forums and Q&A sites such as Quora is also a good way to promote a brand.

  5. Felicia @ No Deposit Poker on March 24, 2011

    Hi Zarko,
The tips you mentioned here are all very helpful for every blogger. I agree that freebies can catch the attention of many readers, especially if the freebies are articles/products/services that are helpful and informative.

    Hello Zarko!
People are always interested on free stuff, etc. But unfortunately some Internet marketers are always hurrying the process where they somehow tend to surprise or intimidate potential customers offering other stuff aside from freebies. What are your thought on these things?
By the way, very logical and informative post you have here. I take down key points from this post for my personal reference.
    Thanks a lot!

  8. Zarko on March 25, 2011

Well it all depends how you go about it Lora.

We won’t get far if we just offer free things right? So we do need to provide something else, the freebies are just an incentive to make people act upon something we want, to buy a product, to keep reading, to subscribe, to come back, to hire our services etc… So we do need to use those freebies to attract more possible customers, the issue is how we go about it. Until we are seen as trustworthy we shouldn’t be selling anything, so stick to freebies and promotion until you get some trust and some repeating visitors, than you can start selling something. The rick behind any kind of promotion is to know when to go to offensive, which is a great idea for the next post :)

  9. Cool New Gadgets on March 25, 2011

Haven’t created profiles on these 3 big ones.. hope to create one soon. thanks for mentioning.

  10. Kyle@FinallyFast on March 25, 2011

Definitely an exhaustive list of promotional ideas. I have to admit though..I’m still stuck on number 1. Coming up with a freebie app or ebook that will warrant the kind of viral traffic we all crave seems like a pretty harrowing task. Sure, I guess the idea isn’t to develop the next “Elf YourSelf”, but just to provide something people in your niche will find valuable, but it’s definitely easier said than done.

  11. DiNaRa on March 28, 2011

I would like to express my vision and share my ideas: free resources are great for promotional but most people think that if you don’t sell your ‘great ideas’, they are not great at all. Some people don’t believe in free stuff being good enough to spend time on them.
I would prefer having some free stuff for promoting the same resources but at a bigger scale, i.e. I would give away some material about my future book where there will be only the main ideas and topics without the detailed explanation and advice. If people feel they need it, they will buy it.

  12. Zarko on March 28, 2011

    You got it right Dinara.

nobody here mentioned giving away complete products, the way to go about it is to give something that will attract attention, offer a limited program, a sneak peak, something that will interest people and give promise of quality, this is just like sampling in real life marketing, these are the basics, and if you thought we were speaking about something else I’m sorry we weren’t clear enough, but your idea sums it up :)

I agree with you about guest blogging being a worthwhile way to promote your website.

I personally see a lot of people told that they need a blog on their site, but have not enough ideas or time to post reguarly, and so the blog dies. However, guest blogging when they do have a strong idea gets their expertise known by a wider audience (the guest blog likely to have an existing readership), and also gets them a good link back to their site.

  15. Maria Pavel@CNA Training on April 1, 2011

I’ve been thinking for a while now of writing and ebook to entice my visitors, but i’ve never done it because i don’t consider myself a “teaching” person. The way i see it, if i don’t know something close to perfection, i can’t really preach to anyone.
But who knows, i’m sure that one day i’ll get there.

  17. Ali Mujtaba@Tinnitus on April 4, 2011

Hello Zarko, I have a question about one thing, Is LinkedIn still good way to promote our website? Since facebook era, LinkedIn is abandoned by the member (I guess) also member of LinkedIn now is more than business people, too serious people.
    Thanks for good article ;)

  18. Zarko on April 5, 2011

yeah, LinkedIn is still a great place to promote a website, honestly, since I offer a more technical product/service I had more success on LinkedIn than I did on Facebook where 99% of people have no clue about SEO and what SEO is! So the bottom line is that it depends on what you have to offer, it doesn’t matter what social network you are on, you always have to surround yourself with people interested in your niche and you will get something in return!

  19. Samantha@teeth grinding on April 20, 2011

Sharing of Free Ebook can be a great strategy, but most Ebooks written by others don’t have that quality. So this strategy can pretty be useless. However, if you’re really an expert in that particular topic, it’s the best way for you to prove your worthiness.

  20. Zarko on April 20, 2011

Yeah, you are right Samantha, offering carp ebooks will get you nowhere, if you are going for this tactic make sure you write something of quality, something that people can learn and implement on their own, provide value and you are all set :)

  21. Owais@SEO Pakistan on April 26, 2011

When I am promoting my SEO projects (actually the clients website) I firstly prepare “Freebies” on the topic of my client’s website and HELL yes it helps in gaining natural inbound links from other related websites! LINKS=SUCCESS! :)

  22. Zarko on April 28, 2011

Yeah, writing with quality in mind and how useful the content will be to your readers is essential if you want to market and get some traffic or even profits from an ebook.

  23. Greg from Spandex Bodysuit on May 1, 2011

Reading through the comments broadened my knowledge on many things. I wanted to know about LinkedIn and now I’m feeling more well informed. Whichever methods and techniques we choose to promote our website one other important factor is winning the loyalty of the readers. It is important to be active and interact with the readers.

  35. Backlink Tips on February 4, 2012

A lot of people are told that they need a blog on their site, but done have enough compelling ideas or time to post regularly and so the blog dies.

  36. Vintage on February 17, 2012

    Hi Zarko

I would like to add a few comments about videos’ value.

    - they can appear in google’s web results pages and drive goog traffic as they have high CTRs regardless of how high they rank

-many people prefer visual content to text and it is great to engage them

-high quality videos can increase that element of trust, users need before purchasing online. Therefore videos can help with leads and conversions too.

Links are very import in SEO, I use a lot of free online classified listings and have joined many forums. It seems to be helping. I have several blogs too.

  39. Trade Show Displays on March 14, 2012

Hey Zakor nice suggestions. Blogs, social media and banner advertising these are the most effective ways for me.

  40. Glidemiddel on April 16, 2012

A really nice piece of work, Zarko!

I’m gonna try the freebie/give away approach, and see if that creates some buzz.

Something I have noticed here in Norway, is that big companies/shops are pretty bad at SEO. They spend millions at TV commercials etc, but they don’t put in much effort to rank high in Google/Bing++. I’m not complaining about that (running a small site myself), but I just find it strange.

    Keep the good articles coming!
